Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off on September 15th and runs until October 15th. It’s a fantastic time for us and our kids to dive into the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. I’ve put together some fun and simple ways we can all celebrate and learn more about this vibrant heritage with our families:

1. Explore Music and Dance

Latin American music and dance are vibrant and widely varied. Families can enjoy salsa, merengue, flamenco, tango, and bachata, among others. Consider taking a dance class together, or simply enjoy watching performances either live or online. Listening to traditional music and learning about its origins and influences can also be a fun and educational activity.

2. Attend Cultural Events and Festivals

Many cities host cultural festivals during Hispanic Heritage Month featuring music, dance, food, and crafts from various Hispanic countries. Attending these festivals can provide a firsthand experience of the diversity and richness of Hispanic cultures.

3. Cook and Enjoy Hispanic Cuisine

Cooking together is a great way to delve into culture. You can explore dishes from different Hispanic countries each week of the month, such as Mexican enchiladas, Puerto Rican mofongo, Spanish paella, or Argentine empanadas. This not only teaches kids about geography and culinary arts but also makes for some delicious meals!

4. Read Books by Hispanic Authors

Visit your local library or bookstore to find children’s books by Hispanic authors or about Hispanic characters. For older kids and adults, seek out award-winning novels, poems, or essays. This can open discussions about the themes and histories presented in these works.

5. Learn About Influential Hispanic Americans

Research and discuss the lives and contributions of influential Hispanic Americans in various fields such as science, politics, arts, and sports. Figures like Sonia Sotomayor, Ellen Ochoa, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Roberto Clemente have inspiring stories that can be motivational for both kids and adults.

6. Participate in Art Projects

Engage in crafts that reflect Hispanic arts, such as making papel picado (cut paper banners) for Mexican celebrations, painting in the style of famous Hispanic artists like Frida Kahlo or Diego Rivera, or creating mosaics inspired by Spanish designs.

7. Watch Movies and Documentaries

There are numerous films and documentaries that celebrate Hispanic heritage or are created by Hispanic filmmakers. Family movie nights can include films like "Coco", "The Book of Life", or "Dora and the Lost City of Gold", which feature Hispanic characters and traditions.

8. Practice or Learn Spanish

If Spanish isn’t already spoken in your home, Hispanic Heritage Month is a perfect time to start learning together. Use apps, books, or audio resources to learn basic Spanish as a family. If you already speak Spanish, consider dedicating more time to reading and speaking it at home.

9. Volunteer for Hispanic Organizations

Look for opportunities to volunteer with organizations that support the Hispanic community. This could be through tutoring, participating in community clean-ups, or helping at an event. It’s a practical way to give back and connect with the community.

10. Visit Museums with Hispanic Exhibits

Many museums will have exhibits dedicated to Hispanic artists, historical figures, or topics during this month. These visits can be educational and inspiring, providing a deeper understanding of the contributions and challenges of Hispanic communities.

By incorporating these activities, families not only celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month but also deepen their appreciation and understanding of the diverse cultures that make up the Hispanic community. This celebration can become a rich, annual tradition that fosters greater cultural awareness and unity.
